Since 1991, the Middlebury Police Department has operated its own latent fingerprint laboratory, eliminating
the need for outsourcing of this particular type of scientific evidence examination. In 2003, the department
was awarded over $38,000 in a crime lab improvement grant. This grant was used to purchase
state-of-the-art forensic equipment to outfit a new laboratory that was incorporated into the design of the new
The MPD Lab focuses primarily on the examination of latent fingerprints, having two trained latent print
examiners on staff. The department accepts evidence from other law enforcement agencies across the
State of Vermont for examination and on occasion has provided technical assistance to the VT Forensic
Laboratory in Waterbury.
In addition to to fingerprint evidence, the laboratory is also equipped to search for and examine other types of
evidence. The laboratory technician is also certified as a Senior Crime Scene Analyst by the International
Association for Identification and provides assistance in the processing and investigation of crime scenes.
In 2006, the laboratory expanded its capabilities with the addition of a forensic video analysis system that
allows the police department to analyze and enhance video media, such as surveillance video.
